Camping Safety Tips
|
If you are going to be camping this summer, take fire safety along with you. Fires started by careless campers and hunters destroy scenic areas, wildlife habitat, and timber-producing forests. Fires should only be built in established camping areas with a fire ring. Make sure your fire is away from trees and brush. Keep tents and other equipment away from your camp fire. Keep a bucket of water and a shovel handy. Drown the fire when you leave, stir the coals, and then drown again. Check the fire to be sure it's cold. Don't use the fire to dry wet boots and clothes. Not only is this hard on them, but they may catch fire. Be sure to fill lanterns well away from your camp fire. Use a flashlight inside your tent rather than a lantern or candle. Put your fire out before going to bed and start it again in the morning. If this sounds like too much trouble, it might be better to use a stove. You should not be smoking while walking along a trail. If you are going to smoke, have a seat, scrape an area down to mineral soil, and have your cigarette. Make sure it is out before you leave. It is a good idea to check at the ranger station for closures and burning restrictions for the area to which you are going. |
